PalmaThe Palma City Council has provisionally closed the stairs that connect the Dalt Murada promenade with the cathedral to carry out tests and check the condition of the infrastructure. The restriction of passage is part of the actions announced less than a month ago by the City Council to evaluate the architectural complex, after technicians warned of its poor condition before the Historical Center Commission.

The objective is to determine the extent of the deficiencies and to know the conservation status of the entire structure, not just the points where cracks have appeared. For this reason, the City Council stated in advance that the entire area of the stairs would be examined to have a global diagnosis before deciding what intervention is needed. The architectural complex dates back to the early 20th century and, according to the City Council, during the last 30 years, the pertinent maintenance has not been carried out. This lack of conservation has motivated the review of the entire infrastructure to determine what actions are necessary and to ensure that it can remain in good condition for the coming years.

Despite the deficiencies detected in the stairs, the City Council ruled out any risk of collapse. The current tests should allow for specifying the condition of the structure and the needs for repair. The municipal corporation has assured that the Palma budget for 2027, still pending plenary approval, includes an item aimed at "resolving the deficiencies" detected in this architectural complex.
