MÉS accuses the mayor of Marratxí of keeping a public housing unit empty for more than two years
The formation of the municipality assures that an Ibavi flat in La Cabana continues to be unoccupied for more than two years and demands explanations from the City Council
PalmaMÉS per Marratxí has accused this Tuesday the mayor of the municipality, Jaume Llompart, of keeping a public housing unit from Ibavi empty for more than two years in the urbanization of La Cabana, despite the housing access crisis. The complaint comes after an attempted occupation has once again placed this property at the center of political debate.
The spokesperson for the formation, Aina Amengual, has described the situation as "shameful" and has assured that it is "a management failure" that a protected housing unit remains unoccupied while there are families, young people, and vulnerable individuals who cannot access affordable rent.
MÉS holds the mayor responsible
The formation points directly to Llompart because, in addition to being mayor, he is responsible for the municipal area of Urbanism, which the City Council officially calls the area of Urbanism and Housing. According to MÉS, it is especially significant that housing does not have its own councilorship within the municipal structure.
Amengual has also recalled the mayor's statements during the handover of the protected housing units in La Cabana, when he assured that he would work so that no resident of Marratxí would have to leave the municipality due to a lack of housing.
They ask for more transparency
MÉS relates this case to the management of the former municipal housing of Gómez Ulla and Sant Alonso. According to the party, the five families from Gómez Ulla obtained seven-year rental contracts in Ibavi apartments, while the two families evicted from Sant Alonso were rehoused in temporary emergency housing.
For this reason, the municipal group demands explanations about the criteria followed and denounces that the City Council has repeatedly denied them information about the people registered in Ibavi housing, which, they assure, prevents the opposition's oversight work. The party maintains that if the management has been done correctly, there should be no impediments for councilors to access this information with the confidentiality guarantees provided by law.
