PalmaThe President of the Government, Marga Prohens, has applauded the calling of early general elections for November 29 and has expressed confidence that the polls will put an end to a Spanish government that, as she has asserted, "has abandoned the Balearic Islands." "At last!", she wrote on her X account after the President of the state executive, Pedro Sánchez, announced the early election in an institutional statement. "The countdown begins for change to reach Spain," she asserted.

Prohens has asserted that the elections are coming after "three years of a rudderless legislature" and a government that "has dedicated itself to resisting instead of governing and solving the citizens' problems". She has also accused the state executive of being "cornered by corruption". The president has also criticized Sánchez's management of territorial and migratory issues. She stated that the Spanish government "has played and will play until the very last moment with confrontation between Spaniards, with the raising of walls, with radicalism and polarization" and that, even, "it has renounced defending our borders and the territorial integrity of the country".

"It has abandoned the Balearic Islands"

In a Balearic context, Prohens has accused the Sánchez executive of having "abandoned the Balearic Islands" during the legislative term. According to the president, the Spanish government "has not listened to a single demand" from the Islands to achieve better financing and has left issues such as the special regime for the Balearic Islands and road and rail investments "up in the air".

She has also questioned the management of the airports and has accused the Spanish government of having maintained an airport policy "against the citizens". In fact, the bill for airport co-management by MÉS per Mallorca, which was just beginning to be processed in Congress, will lapse as a consequence of the early election. "In the end, when there was no other way out, the Spanish people will have the word to decide the future of Spain," stated Prohens, who pointed out that now "the countdown begins for change to arrive in Spain" with a government led by the People's Party's Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

"The PSIB is not united"

For his part, the PP spokesperson in the Parliament, Sebastià Sagreras, has avoided giving details about who will lead the party's list to Congress. In 2023 it was José Vicente Marí Bosó, current deputy spokesperson for the PP parliamentary group in Congress. However, Sagreras did lash out at the PSIB. "It is not united," he assured, and said he has information that some of the socialist officials "who will be displaced" in Madrid, such as the Secretary of State for Security, Aina Calvo, could run in the primaries. "We have received word that within the PSIB there is elbowing, Aina Calvo could dispute the candidacy," he said.
