PalmThe Spanish government has included the second power cable between Menorca and Mallorca in its 2025-30 state investment plan, which will entail an investment of more than €200 million.

This was explained at the meeting held this Wednesday between the Minister of Business, Self-Employed Workers and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, and the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, from Mallorca, in the round of meetings held by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) on Electricity Planning with a 2030 horizon, before the start of the public hearing, in which all stakeholders will be able to present their views and make contributions.

At the meeting, which was attended by government technicians, the Secretary of State for Energy and the System Operator, both administrations agreed on the opportunity that this new planning cycle represents. Following the push for renewable integration fostered by the current 2021-2026 Planning, the new proposal is aimed at facilitating the connection of new demand, with the aim of supporting the decarbonization of Spanish industry, consolidating new industrial projects with a high social impact, promoting territorial integration, and, ultimately, facilitating the generation of generation of generation of generation.

Along these lines, both executives analyzed the main lines of the initial proposal, assessing that it initially includes important actions for the Balearic Islands and the country as a whole, such as the completion of the connection of the second cable between the Peninsula and Mallorca and the second cable between Mallorca and Menorca, which will increase the security of supply and consumption of electricity.

In addition to these major infrastructures, the proposal includes the electrification of the ports of Palma, Alcudia, Ibiza, and Mahón, the integration of renewables, and storage. An increase in infrastructure capacity for industrial activity is also proposed, contributing to the diversification of the island's economy and for new housing. For the islands as a whole, work is expected on 123 positions and nearly 30 substations, including nine new substations.

Processing continues

The initial Planning proposal for the 2030 horizon has been prepared following technical criteria based on the contributions presented in the proposal phase, as well as the priorities of the regional executive. The document will be submitted for public consultation after this first round of regional meetings, and its strategic environmental assessment, also open to participation, will be processed in parallel.

Once the contributions have been collected in the public consultation phase, the physical, technical, and environmental viability of the proposed framework will be analyzed, taking into account the guiding principles of Planning. The result of this second technical analysis will be the subject of a report by the National Commission on Markets and Competition, which will analyze compliance with the economic and financial sustainability criteria.

Based on its conclusions, the consolidated document and the strategic environmental statement will be prepared, which will be presented to the Congress of Deputies before approval by the Council of Ministers.
