1,650 packs of contraband tobacco are seized from a 25-year-old passenger at Palma airport
The merchandise, valued at 6,600 euros, did not bear the mandatory fiscal seals and the passenger has been reported for a smuggling offense
PalmaThe Civil Guard and the Customs Surveillance Service have seized 1,650 packets of contraband tobacco, valued at 6,600 euros, which a 25-year-old passenger from Greece was carrying hidden in a suitcase at Palma airport. The operation took place on Tuesday during fiscal and security checks carried out at the arrivals terminal.
The agents detected the passenger after she collected her luggage and began to walk away hastily with the intention of leaving the premises, an attitude that aroused suspicion. Members of the Civil Guard's and Customs Surveillance's Unit for Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation intercepted the woman before she left the terminal.
According to investigators, the passenger appeared nervous and responded evasively when questioned, although she stated that she had nothing to declare. The agents took the woman to the Customs offices, where they inspected her luggage using X-rays and subsequently opened the suitcase.
Inside, they found 1,650 packets of tobacco that did not have the legally established fiscal seals. The merchandise was seized and deposited in the airport's Customs offices, while a report was filed against the passenger for a smuggling offense. This offense can result in a fine of up to three times the value of the seized tobacco.
