PalmAutumn begins this Monday, September 22nd, at 8:19 p.m. It does so after saying goodbye to the last days of summer, which have brought calm weather and warmth. Thus, on the first day of the new season, a notable change in weather will arrive, with a temperature drop of about six degrees and a high probability of rain and storms.
In fact, this Monday saw the last storm of the summer, which resulted in up to eleven incidents, all of them minor. During the early morning, there were thunderstorms (as can be seen in the Balearic Islands Weather video), heavy rain, and wind gusts exceeding 115 km/h in some places.
The areas with the most incidents and the most violent storms are Palma, Sencelles, and Llucmajor. However, incidents have also been reported in Sineu, Algaida, Esporles, and Felanitx.
It's important to remember that the Balearic Islands were on orange alert for rain and storms, so Palma City Council has taken precautions and closed Paseo de Sagrera and Bellver Park to ensure public safety.
Friday and Saturday were generally stable, with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures that remained fairly constant, although Saturday saw periods of low clouds and some light precipitation.
The first day of autumn, Monday the 22nd, will be more unstable, with overcast skies and locally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, falling temperatures, and winds blowing from the southwest to the north and northeast.
The Aemet (National Meteorological Agency) forecasts that autumn in the Balearic Islands will be warmer than expected and with average rainfall. The change of season will arrive on September 22nd and will last for almost 90 days, until December 21st, when winter will give way. The forecast is for autumn to be divided into two parts: the first with sunny days, scattered clouds, and intense storms with the possibility of tornadoes or stingrays; and the second with more gray weather, widespread rain, and even the first frosts and snowfalls in the Tramuntana mountains in November.
The equinox
According to data from the National Astronomical Observatory collected by Europa Press, the beginning of autumn coincides with the equinox, the moment when day and night are practically the same length, as the sun crosses the celestial equator heading south.
During the autumn of 2025, several notable astronomical phenomena will be observed, such as the Draconid meteor showers (October 8), the Orionids (October 21), the Leonids (November 17), and the Geminids (December 14).
The full moons will arrive on October 7, November 5, and December 5. This time of year is also characterized by a rapidly shortening daylength: each day, the sun rises slightly later and sets earlier, causing the available sunlight to decrease by almost three minutes each day.
