Alcúdia welcomes back the White Demons after 36 years
These distinctive characters have paraded through the streets of the town during the Sant Antoni weekend
PalmThe White Demons of Alcúdia have once again graced the streets of the town 36 years after their last appearance, in a highly participatory and emotional event. The town hosted this moving event last Saturday, as the group returned to the streets after their last performance in 1989. This was met with particular enthusiasm by the founding members, who were able to see the masks from more than three decades ago come to life once more.
As a prelude to their appearance, on Friday morning, the 16th, the Demonis Blancs (White Demons) visited several schools in the municipality to introduce the tradition to the youngest children. Specifically, the group visited CEIP Norai, CEIP Sa Porta des Moll, the Nuestra Señora de la Consolación school, and EI Sa Pilota, sharing the experience with the children in a fun and educational atmosphere. During the preceding week, more than 400 students from the municipality learned about the demons, their history, and their cultural significance by visiting the exhibition of costumes and masks at the Can Torró library. On the night of the 16th, the Demonis Blancs appeared at the bonfires throughout the town, dancing and enlivening the festivities in an atmosphere of fire and celebration. The highlight came at dusk on the 17th when, despite the threat of rain, the weather held, allowing the demons to make their appearance. The parade wound its way through the village streets to the church of Alcúdia, coinciding with the celebration of Les Beneïdes. During this time, the White Devils were also blessed, which elicited laughter from the onlookers.
