Palm40% of people at risk of poverty in the Balearic Islands have jobs, according to the report 'Analysis of social and economic exclusion in Spain and its territories', published this Wednesday by the Ramón Areces Foundation and Ivie. According to the document, ending the situation of poverty risk would cost around 24,000 euros per year, which represents 1.8% of the country's GDP, although "there are significant differences" in the income needed in different territories.

The text indicates that in the Balearic Islands, 11.6% of the population lives below the poverty line. This is one of the conclusions of the aforementioned analysis. The study was prepared by the Ivie research team, led by Carmen Herrero and comprising Antonio Villar and Carlos Albert.

The text states that the national economy is in a process of expansion, characterized by a significant increase in employed population and minimum wage. Despite all this, this economic growth does not manage to end poverty, as is evident from this report. Poverty risk is defined as an income below 60% of the median (the value that separates the 50% of the population with the highest income from that with less) and extreme poverty or exclusion, as an income below 40% of the median, Ivie specified in a statement.

Levels have been reduced

In this regard, in 2025, 19.5% of the State's population was at risk of poverty, a rate that has decreased by 12% between 2015 and 2025. The decline in the percentage of people suffering from extreme poverty or exclusion has been greater, falling by 28% in this same period to stand at 8% last year.

If in 2015, 50.4% of people at risk of poverty were also at risk of exclusion, last year this percentage has been cut by almost ten points, to 41.3%. Taking into account not only the proportion of the population at risk of poverty or exclusion, but also their average incomes. It is considered that ending the situation of risk of poverty would cost about 24,000 million euros annually, which represents 1.8% of the country's GDP, and eliminating the risk of exclusion would have a much lower cost, around 8,800 million euros annually, which represents 0.7% of the GDP of each of the years in the period analyzed.
