An administrative error forces Cort to repeat the study of the works in Plaça Major

PalmaThe Palma City Council has had to re-issue the load study necessary for the reform of Plaça Major after detecting an error in the administrative documentation. Cort assures that the incident has already been corrected and that the new procedure does not imply any change in the deadlines set for carrying out the work.

The City Council explains that the load study that had to be reprocessed is not necessary in the initial phase of the project, but rather later, when the work is more advanced. For this reason, the administrative rectification does not condition the start of the works, municipal sources assure.

"The planned dates are maintained," emphasize sources from Cort, thus decoupling the administrative incident from the work execution schedule. This project, called Àgora, was announced in April 2025. It is developed by the studio Barceló Balanzó and Scob and aims to open the underground galleries and turn them into an open agora.

Precisely in April 2026, Cort approved the contracting file for the drafting service of the integral works project that will develop the preliminary project. The base tender budget is 1.4 million euros (VAT included) and the action will be partially financed with funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS).

The proposal stems from the ideas competition convened by Cort, which was won by the team formed by Barceló Balanzó and Scob. The project also includes the connection of the end of the Rambla with the square by burying the access to the car park and reorganizing the space into two differentiated levels. In addition, the renovation will allow for the location of the future City interpretation center, which will connect the old train tunnel with the Parc de la Mar.
