Ben Amics brings out the Pride of Palma and awards CEIP Sant Jordi in Manacor
The entity recognizes the center's work in sexual and gender education and dedicates the Pink Devil to denouncing LGTBI-phobic aggressions
ManacorBen Amics has celebrated this year in Manacor the delivery of the Siurell and Dimoni Rosa awards, one of the events linked to Pride in the Balearic Islands. The event served to recognize the work of CEIP Sant Jordi, from Palma, in sexual and gender education, and to denounce LGTBI-phobic aggressions, which have received this edition's Dimoni Rosa.
It is the first time that these awards are celebrated outside of Palma, in a context marked by the distancing between Ben Amics and the City Council. The LGTBI entity has harshly criticized the celebration model promoted by the Consistory, which it has gone so far as to describe as a "tourist embarrassment", and this year there has not been the usual collaboration between both parties.
A recognition of education
The Siurell, the entity's positive award, has gone to CEIP Sant Jordi, which won by popular vote against the other two candidates: Manacor Town Hall and artist Jordi Maranges. Ben Amics wanted to recognize the educational center's work in sexual and gender education.
On the contrary, the Pink Demon, an ironic and denunciatory guard, has focused on LGTBI-phobic aggressions. The entity has placed special emphasis on a recent aggression in the Pere Garau market, in Palma. This candidacy has prevailed over those of the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, and the president of the Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne.
The Earthquake of Alcorcón, Golden Whistler
Ben Amics has also announced the Siurell d’Or for Terremoto de Alcorcón, in recognition of her career in creating safe leisure and advocacy spaces for LGBTI people.
The entity has extended this recognition to Pepa Charro and bar Flexas, to whom it attributes a key role in the construction of an Pride festival that, according to Ben Amics, had become part of Palma's identity, but which it considers the City Council "has made disappear".
