Waste management

PalmThe 2025 waste management report confirms a growing gap between municipalities with intensive systems and those maintaining conventional models. Waste management in Mallorca during 2025 paints a clear picture: municipalities that have implemented intensive selective collection systems, especially door-to-door collection, achieve results far superior to the rest. According to official data from the Consell de Mallorca (Mallorca Council), Bunyola leads the ranking with 80.69% selective collection, a figure well above the average. The municipality of Bunyola thus becomes the one that recycles the most on the island, with more than eight out of every ten kilos of waste destined for the recycling system. The result reflects both citizen commitment and the efficiency of the door-to-door model, which allows for minimizing the amount of non-recyclable waste.

Behind Bunyola are Valldemossa (57.21%) and Artà (49.62%), reinforcing the trend that collection systems with source separation and removal of containers from public roads are the most effective. Banyalbufar also stands out, approaching 50%, despite the logistical difficulties arising from its topography.

The municipalities at the bottom

At the other end of the scale are municipalities with much lower rates. Sóller closes the ranking with 19.11%, a figure marked by the lack of significant organic waste collection, a service that will not be rolled out until 2026. Fornalutx and Deià also hover around 20%, with a strong dependence on residual waste.

The analysis of large urban and tourist centers paints a more complex picture. Palma registers a 23.62% recycling rate; Calvià, 24.55%; and Alcúdia, 24.17%. Despite managing large volumes of packaging and glass, the weight of waste linked to hotel activity and the high density of services limits the overall percentage.

The role of intermunicipal associations

Intermunicipal associations play a significant role in the territorial balance of recycling. The Pla de Mallorca Intermunicipal Association reaches 37.23%, while the Raiguer Intermunicipal Association reaches 33.94%. These supramunicipal entities allow small towns, which individually might face management difficulties, to achieve competitive figures, even surpassing the capital and several tourist municipalities. Overall, the 2025 data confirm that the implemented collection model is crucial to the results and that the gap between municipalities that have decisively committed to door-to-door collection and those that maintain traditional systems is now more pronounced than ever.
