Cala Murta recovers its historic youth camp

PalmaThe Santa Maria de Formentor youth camp, located on the Cala Murta estate, will recover its use as a space for camps and educational activities after its refurbishment. The space, linked for decades to youth camps, will thus return to having a public use intended mainly for children and young people.

The facilities are located within the Cala Murta estate, in Formentor, a space of about 710 hectares included within the Serra de Tramuntana. The camp will have a maximum capacity of 70 places and it is planned that it will be able to host activities throughout the year, especially during school holiday periods.

The recovery of the site will be carried out through an agreement with the Rotger Villalonga Foundation, owner of the facilities. The entity is currently executing the renovation and refurbishment works of the camp. According to the agreement, reached with the Council of Mallorca, once the works are finished and the necessary authorizations obtained, the facilities will be managed by the Council of Mallorca for a period of 20 years, with the possibility of extending it for five more years. The handover is scheduled for no later than December 15, 2027, although it could be brought forward if the works are finished sooner.

A space linked to youth camps

The recovery of Cala Murta will allow the reuse of a space that has a history linked to youth camps. The project foresees that the site will host camps, educational and training activities, as well as cultural and outreach proposals related to the Serra de Tramuntana.

The environment will allow for the development of activities related to the landscape, heritage, and natural environment of the Serra, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The camp will have cabins, a main building, a dining hall, a kitchen, sanitary facilities, and showers, among other amenities.

The agreement establishes a total amount of 7,751,526.35 euros for the 20-year lease. The period will begin once the Rotger Villalonga Foundation has finished the works and delivered the facilities.

Thus, Cala Murta will recover its function as a space for coexistence and activities for children and young people, now with a program that will combine camps with educational activities linked to the surroundings of Formentor and the Serra de Tramuntana.
