CCOO denounces "serious irregularities" at Tirme and demands "forceful" action from the Consell de Mallorca, Labour Inspectorate, and Public Prosecutor's Office
The union denounces a "disproportionate" increase in workloads and points out that the concessionaire's profits have gone from 15.6 million in 2019 to 32.6 million in 2024
PalmaCCOO has called for "forceful" action from the Consell de Mallorca, the Labour Inspectorate, and the Public Prosecutor's Office in response to the "abuses and serious irregularities" that, according to the union, are occurring at Tirme, the concessionary company responsible for managing the public service of urban waste treatment in Mallorca. The trade union organisation points out that the concessionary's net profits have risen from 15.6 million euros in 2019 to 32.6 million in 2024.
In a statement, CCOO stated that a report from the general comptroller of the Consell de Mallorca reveals "serious irregularities" at the company and "confirms the need" for the audit that the union has been demanding for two years. In November 2024, CCOO intervened in the plenary session of the Consell and met with the president of the island institution, Llorenç Galmés, to formally request a comprehensive audit of the company.
At that time, the union already publicly denounced the “drift” of the concessionaire after the signing of a collective agreement that CCOO did not sign because it considered that it meant “a drastic loss of rights for the staff”.
Among the “abuses” it denounces, CCOO points out that the company has “disproportionately” increased workloads to avoid new hirings, has “unilaterally” imposed vacation periods, and has eliminated family reconciliation measures. Furthermore, the union assures that the company laid off a worker with 30 years of seniority who was on medical leave. “The economic benefits of public contracts can never be sustained on exploitation, excessive workload, and the cutback of fundamental rights of workers,” argued the union, which reiterated the request for intervention from the Consell de Mallorca, the Labor Inspectorate, and the Prosecutor’s Office, and warned that the situation of the facilities and workloads “require urgent and firm action”.
