The first day of the 112 strike ends without reaching minimum services.

CGT has denounced that these minimum services prevent workers from exercising their right to strike.

ARA Balears

PalmThe first day of the indefinite strike by 112 emergency services workers in the Balearic Islands has proceeded without achieving the 100% minimum service level decreed by the company that manages the service. Specifically, the minimum service level was not met on all three shifts, as the established number of operators was not reached, demonstrating "the impossibility of covering the service" due to a lack of personnel, according to the CGT Baleares union. The organization has filed a claim for 100% minimum service level, believing that this "prevents" emergency service workers from exercising their right to join the strike.

The CGT has explained that, despite attempts at negotiation in recent days with both the company's manager, Francisca González, and the Director of Public Service, Antoni Mesquida, "an agreement that benefits both parties has not been reached." They also lamented the "non-compliance" with the agreements that halted the last strike call in December 2024—a breach they attributed to those responsible for the 112 service—and recalled that, in the face of this, they have been "forced" to demand their rights, which "directly affect citizens and tourism."

Thus, they criticized the fact that, after numerous meetings, the "deep-rooted job insecurity" suffered by workers in the Balearic Islands-112 Emergency Management system was demonstrated, along with the need for "improvements" in urgent and emergency services for citizens and the needs of the needy. In response to this, they asserted that those responsible for the service demonstrated that it is not a "lack of budget," but rather a "lack of will to improve workers' conditions," by demanding that they "renounce their rights to alleviate the staff shortage that has been experienced for many years."

To continue with their demands, the workers have called for a rally on July 9th at 10:00 a.m. in front of Parliament, which will then move to the Ministry of the Presidency and Public Administrations—responsible for the emergency service—at 12:00 p.m. For this mobilization, they requested the collaboration of the public, since "the safety of all depends on an efficient emergency service."

It should be recalled that the CGT announced an indefinite strike by the 112 service starting this Thursday due to the "breach" of the agreements reached to call off the previous strike, called in December. The strikes will take place between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., starting this Thursday and indefinitely. According to the union, the decision was made because, despite the "good faith, patience, and trust" shown so far, workers are once again facing "the same or worse conditions than in previous years."

The CGT explained that the workers opted for this measure in response to the administration's "inaction" in addressing the issues raised, following numerous meetings with the company's management—both previous and current—the service's top managers, who emphasized that it is "essential for the public," and other representatives of the government.

In this way, they aim to highlight the "deep-rooted job insecurity" suffered by the Balearic Islands' Emergency Management system and the need for improvements in emergency services. "The safety of everyone depends on an efficient emergency service," they emphasized. To ensure a "rapid and effective response" to any emergency, they added, they believe it is necessary to increase the workforce because "more emergency managers, specialized technicians, and administrative staff are needed."

On the other hand, they demand improvements in working conditions, since it is "essential" to increase salaries and guarantee compliance with the labor agreement, which "has not been applied in recent years."

"It is irresponsible to maintain an emergency service with low staff due to constant obstacles, administrative difficulties, constant blockages and, above all, the precarious working conditions to which its workers are subjected, which makes the failure rate of new hires very high."
