The Dragonera buoy registers 32.7 degrees and could mark a historic record in the Mediterranean
The sensor has measured a temperature of 32.7 ºC at three meters of depth, a value that, if Ports de l'Estat validates it, would be the highest ever recorded in the waters of the State and could become a record for the entire Mediterranean.
PalmaThe Balearic Sea continues to break temperature records. The oceanographic buoy located off Dragonera registered a temperature of 32.7 degrees Celsius at a depth of three meters this Thursday, an exceptional figure that could go down in history, according to data from Meteo de les Illes.
According to initial information, if Ports de l'Estat validates the record, it would be the highest temperature ever measured in Spanish waters and could even represent a new record for the entire Mediterranean.
This record comes amid a marine heatwave and coincides with an episode of very high temperatures on land as well. According to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the weekend will continue to be marked by intense heat, with maximums that could reach 37 degrees on Saturday and up to 38 degrees on Sunday in some parts of Mallorca.
The Aemet delegate in the Balearic Islands, María José Guerrero, pointed out that the situation will be characterized by the persistence of very high temperatures both day and night. The minimum will range between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius, which will maintain tropical nights and, in many places, also torrid nights.
On Friday, a yellow alert will be active for high temperatures in the interior of Mallorca, while on Saturday, the alerts will affect Mallorca and Ibiza. On Sunday, the maximum is expected to be between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius again, without a significant change in the meteorological situation. The temperature recorded by the Dragonera buoy highlights the exceptional warming that the Mediterranean is experiencing this summer. Such high values have direct consequences on marine ecosystems, favor marine heatwaves, and can also influence the evolution of the weather in the coming weeks.
