PalmaThe organizations Sineu en Bici i a Peu, Vianants Mallorca, the Train Users Association (AUT), and Terraferida have evaluated the new law regulating vehicle influx approved by the Consell de Mallorca, but they consider that the norm, by itself, will not serve to decongest the island. In a joint statement, they demand that the Consell and the Government stop announcing studies and large future infrastructures and promote immediate improvements in public transport.

The collectives recall that Mallorca has suffered from "structural saturation" since 2017, with more than one vehicle per adult and an excess of over 118,000 cars during August compared to the capacity that the Consell itself considers manageable. Therefore, they call for increasing the frequencies of the railway lines to sa Pobla and Manacor, recovering the eliminated semi-direct trains, reinforcing the bus service, recovering the VAO lane for access to Palma, and allocating the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) to public transport.

The entities argue that all these measures can be implemented "from today" without the need for new works or reports. "Putting barriers to car entry without a dignified alternative is like putting up a fence without opening any door. More studies or works are not needed to know what to do: it needs to be done," they conclude.
