AlgaidaAmidst music, knowing glances, contained emotion, and speaking silences, the Algaida Town Hall yesterday inaugurated the Memory Corner at the entrance of the municipal cemetery.

It was the culmination of an anticipated event since the creation of this space for remembrance, dignity, and, above all, justice began to take shape at the beginning of 2025.

Amidst notes of longed-for music and verses performed by Tallats de Lluna and the memory of the Spilled Blood ninety years ago, local authorities, residents, and people from other municipalities attended a historic event with the unveiling of a space that represents a further step in the dignity of all victims of Francoism and, especially, of the twenty or so Algaida residents who lost their lives during the unleashed repression between the summer of 1936 and the first months of 1937.

From now on, the entrance to the cemetery includes an embellished green area that invites contemplation, crowned by the sculpture Mural d’en Frau, the piece of rusted iron on a sandstone base donated by Pere Josep Pascual Sureda.

"A person dies the day they stop living, but there is a second death, the one that comes when we stop saying their name," said the mayoress of Algaida, Margalida Fullana, in her speech, adding that "today this Corner is born so that no person from our towns has to die a second time, because death is inevitable, but forgetting is a decision. And today Algaida makes a decision, it decides to remember".

However, besides looking to the past, this space looks to the future: "This Corner is located at the entrance of the cemetery, but it does not only look towards those who are no longer here, but also towards those of us who are still here; it challenges us". Because this space represents "a commitment so that never again any person is persecuted, repressed or murdered for their ideas".

This inauguration becomes the first major step of the Municipal Ordinance of Democratic Memory, a regulatory framework approved last May with the votes in favor of PSIB and MÉS under the unrenounceable premise of "Without memory there is no future". In fact, the creation of this permanent corner was set as the highest priority by the Democratic Memory Commission since its establishment, within the framework of the Culture Council, in March 2025.

With this act, Algaida "has not only dignified its physical space, but has also extended a hand of comfort to almost a hundred families who, directly or indirectly, suffered the horror of the dictatorship".
