Manacor and Girona take a key step toward advancing twinning

The mayors, Miquel Oliver and Lluc Salellas, led the institutional meeting at Manacor City Hall.

PalmManacor and Girona have taken a further step in the twinning process this Saturday with the constitution of the Twinning Committee, a joint body that will promote the joint work plan between both cities, according to the Manacor City Council.

The meeting took place in the plenary hall of the Manacor City Council and was attended by institutional and cultural representatives of the two municipalities, headed by the mayors of GironaLluc Salellas, and Miquel Oliver from Manacor. The meeting, marked by a desire for cooperation and cultural exchange, served to agree on the initial lines of collaboration.

Oliver emphasized that the twinning will allow us to "discover other realities, share lessons learned, and reaffirm that culture is a driving force for transformation and social cohesion."

For his part, Salellas thanked Manacor for its welcome and emphasized that his visit "is also a learning experience about what is done in a sister city." He added that the twinning is designed "for the present and the future" and stressed that "with Manacor we share a passion for culture, the performing arts, and language."

The twinning agreement, recently approved by both councils, aims to strengthen cultural and social ties through the exchange of experiences and collaboration in areas such as the performing arts, language, and popular culture.

Shared cultural capital

With this step, both cities are moving toward a shared cultural capital status that will allow for the organization of meetings, exchanges, and joint projects in the artistic, educational, and heritage fields.

The Girona delegation, led by Salellas, consisted of the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Sports, and Education, Quim Ayats; the Deputy Mayor for Services to People and Catalan Language, Núria Riquelme; the representative of the Girona Theater Association, Núria Santaló; and Antoni Lima, of the Colla Gegantera la Falera Gironina.

They were received at Manacor Town Hall, where they visited the Antoni Maria Alcover Public Institution. They also attended the presentation of the Manacor Theatre Season in the auditorium.

On the Manacor side, the twinning committee was headed by the mayor, the delegate for Culture, Ferran Montero; the delegate for Language Policy, Sebastià Llodrà; the director of theMallorquí Municipal SchoolMargalida Rosselló; and representatives of the Sant Domingo Cultural Association, the Colla Gegantera (Joana Maria Oliver), and the Es Mostrador Association (Maria Magdalena Vives).

Girona is the second municipality to be twinned with Manacor, after Castel Sant'Elia (Italy), with whom the agreement was formalized in March 2024.
