A massive singing of 'La Balanguera' will unite all the municipalities of Mallorca

PalmaThe Obra Cultural Balear presented this Wednesday the latest details of the great simultaneous singing of La Balanguera which will take place this Friday, May 29, throughout Mallorca. The initiative aims to commemorate the centenary of the musical premiere of Joan Alcover's poem with music by Amadeu Vives.

According to sources from the entity, all the municipalities of Mallorca and more than 300 cultural, educational, and social entities have joined a call that they have defined as a “great collective celebration of Mallorcan culture, language, and identity”.

The president of the OCB, Antoni Llabrés, highlighted the “cross-cutting, popular, and territorial” nature of the proposal, which has mobilized town councils of all political sensitivities, educational centers, choirs, music bands, and associations from all over the island around one of the main identity symbols of Mallorca.

The day will begin at 12 noon with a simultaneous singing in educational centers, to which more than 250 schools in Mallorca have already adhered. Among the highlighted events will be a great singing at La Misericòrdia organized jointly by the Consell de Mallorca and the OCB, in addition to other collective calls in neighborhoods and municipalities on the island.

In Palma, Plaça Major will host the central singing at 8 PM, with the participation of the Banda de Música de Palma, the Escola de Música i Danses de Mallorca, and numerous choirs and musical groups. After the event, there will be a popular dance with Música Nostra. The commemoration is part of the events of the Any Alcover, coinciding with the centenary of the death of the Mallorcan poet and the one hundred years since the first musical performance of La Balanguera, premiered on May 29, 1926, at the Palau de la Música Catalana. Llabrés has called on citizens to fill the streets and squares on a day that, as he assured, “will become historic” for the culture and language of Mallorca.
