PalmThe MÉS per Mallorca group in the Consell has criticized the purchase of thousands of backpacks and bags manufactured in India by the island's governing team, a decision they consider “disproportionate, inconsistent, and profoundly hypocritical”.

In a statement, the party denounces that this action has been repeated throughout the legislature and places it within a line of public procurement that, they claim, does not prioritize local products. The party recalls that approximately a year ago the Consell already acquired thousands of Mallorcan flags manufactured in China to distribute them on the occasion of the Diada, a fact that also generated controversy.

For MÉS per Mallorca, the fact that the current products are manufactured in India is particularly serious, as the Consell has the promotion of local products among its responsibilities. The party's deputy spokesperson in the institution, Joan Llodrà, has accused the PP of “hypocrisy” for publicly defending proximity products while promoting purchases from thousands of kilometers away. “You cannot fill your mouth defending local products and, at the same time, spend public money on products manufactured abroad, with a large ecological footprint and often questionable working conditions”, he stated.

Reivindication of the local productive fabric

Despite acknowledging that the integral manufacturing of this type of material may be complex on the island, MÉS per Mallorca maintains that Mallorca has a consolidated business fabric in areas such as screen printing, stamping, and personalization of textile and promotional products. In this regard, the party considers that, at the very least, the Consell could have opted for a part of the process —such as finishing or personalization— to be carried out on the island, with the aim of generating economic activity and local employment.

Llodrà has compared this policy with previous stages of the Consell and has assured that it “reminds [him] of the worst years of Maria Antònia Munar's term”, when —as he said— the institution allocated significant amounts of resources to self-promotion. “A year ago they were distributing flags made in China and now they are buying bags and backpacks made in India. This is their idea of local product”, concluded the spokesperson.
