Nearly 1,700 vehicles over 25 years old will once again pay road tax in Porreres.
"It doesn't make sense to give these vehicles discounts when they are the most polluting, and we are moving toward hybrid and less polluting models."
PorreresVehicles in Porreres that are over 25 years old, an estimated 1,700, but do not have the status of historic vehicle, according to the DGT, will begin to pay road tax starting in 2026, a burden they have been exempt from until now.
The Porreres City Council approved the amendment to the tax ordinance regulating the tax on mechanically propelled vehicles so that they can begin paying, with the votes in favor of the governing team (El Pi-PP) and the abstention of the opposition MÉS.
Maria Blanco, Councilor for Economy and Finance, explained in the plenary session that "it makes no sense to give these vehicles a discount when they are the most polluting and we are moving towards hybrid and less polluting models." The implementation of this charge "will be in next year's taxes," Blanco explained.
The mayor of Porreres, Xisca Mora, explains that the fact that vehicles over 25 years old do not pay road tax "is at odds with the fact that if what we do is subsidize electric vehicles that are non-polluting and, on the other hand, we give discounts to these vehicles over 2, we suggest that this should be regularized."
In this sense, however, the mayor adds that historic vehicles are still not subject to payment, but those over 25 years old that do not have this qualification granted by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) that can circulate in the town will begin to pay the tax from October 2026. implies the modification of the tax rate for all vehicles, but "we only remove the exceptionality of these vehicles over 25 years."
The spokesperson for MÁS, Sebastià Lliteres, explained that "the objective of the modification is positive, but our abstention on this point is due to the fact that we consider that there should be more modifications to this ordinance. We also think that the tax should be increased for those people who have more cars.
The eco-sovereignty spokesperson also stated that "in the end, this modification once again affects working people and we thought that it was not the time to add more taxes to these people, since they always end up paying for the fact that they cannot acquire an electric vehicle, for example."
