All traffic closures for the eclipse are already active in Mallorca

PalmaInformation updated at 5:10 PM. All planned restrictions on roads, access to natural areas, and parking lots to ensure safety during the eclipse are already in effect in the Balearic Islands. In Mallorca, access to the Serra de Tramuntana via the Ma-10 and about twenty other roads leading to viewpoints, coves, and spots where a large turnout is expected has been controlled since 3 PM.

Some road closures had to be brought forward due to the massive arrival of vehicles. Restrictions on the Ma-10 between Andratx and Valldemossa began in the morning, while the parking lots of Cala Banyalbufar, Cala Estellencs, Cala Tuent, and La Calobra are already full and closed, as reported by the General Directorate of Emergencies.

Access to Port del Canonge, Port de Valldemossa, and Cap de les Salines are also closed. Similarly, restrictions have been advanced on the road from Andratx to Sant Elm, to Puig de Randa, and on the road from Ses Salines to the Trenc parking lot. In Valldemossa, traffic is being diverted towards Sóller and Deià.

On Platja de Palma, where the City Council estimates that around 70,000 people may gather during the eclipse, the exits from the Ma-19 that give access to the area are already closed. Only residents and other groups authorized by the operation are allowed to enter.

Affected roads will be monitored and controlled, generally, until 9 PM. However, the times and restricted points may vary depending on occupancy and traffic conditions.

The measures affect all motor vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds.

Current Situation

• Ma-10: activities restricted at the accesses to the Serra de Tramuntana from 3 p.m., with several advanced closures during the morning between Andratx and Valldemossa.
• Andratx: roadblock activated at one of the points planned by the device.
• Esporles: Ma-10 cut off in the direction of Banyalbufar in the vicinity of Les Mosqueres.
• Valldemossa: traffic rerouting towards Sóller and Deià.
• Ses Salines and Es Trenc: road closed until the Es Trenc car park.
• Cala Tuent: full parking and traffic recirculation.
• Sa Calobra: parking full and closed to new vehicles.
• Cala Banyalbufar: full and closed parking.
• Cala Estellencs: full and closed parking.
• Canonge's Gate: access closed.
• Valldemossa Pass: access closed.
• Sant Elm: restricted access from Andratx.
• Puig de Randa: access road closed.
• Cap de les Salines: access closed.
• Cap de Formentor: occupancy close to the limit; Emergencies plans to intervene if the influx continues to increase.
• Santa Ponça: traffic cut between Plaça de Santa Ponça and Carrer de Lisboa.
• Playa de Palma: first line closed to private traffic from 9 a.m.; about 70,000 people are expected there during the eclipse.
• Ma-19: exits 6, 7A and 8 affected by closure and controls at exits 10 and 11, according to the municipal device.
• Punta Nati, in Menorca: restricted access from 8 a.m.
• Cap de Cavalleria, in Menorca: access closed.
• Camí de Tramuntana, in Menorca: access closed to traffic.
• El Toro, in Menorca: Mercadal-el Toro car park closed.
• Cala d’Hort, in Eivissa: parking full and closed, but without any general road closure communicated.
• Cala Tarida, in Ibiza: the section between Plaça de la Mar and Carrer de la Punta de s’Embarcador has been cut off.
• Formentera: for the moment, no road closures have been reported.

Restrictions on the Ma-10 between Andratx and Valldemossa

The restrictions on the Ma-10 between Andratx and Valldemossa, initially planned from 3 p.m. onwards, had to be brought forward during the morning due to the large influx of vehicles. From 3 p.m., the device controls access to the Serra de Tramuntana via this road and around twenty other routes leading to coves, viewpoints, and other observation points.

In Esporles, the City Council has reported the closure of the Ma-10 towards Banyalbufar in the vicinity of Les Mosqueres due to the high influx of vehicles.

The control point planned in the municipality is located on the Ma-10, around kilometer marker 79.100 and the junction with the Ma-1100, at the height of La Granja d'Esporles.

In Valldemossa, diversions have been activated to redirect vehicles towards Sóller and Deià, preventing them from continuing towards more crowded areas.

The measures were applied before the general 3 p.m. schedule because several parking lots and observation points were already approaching their capacity limit. The Esporles City Council asks not to head towards Banyalbufar and to avoid unnecessary travel.

Full parking lots at Cala Tuent and La Calobra

The car parks of Cala Tuent and La Calobra have reached maximum capacity. Emergencies has activated re-routing to Cala Tuent and asks drivers not to head towards these points.

Access to La Calobra is via the Ma-2141, a narrow road with a complex layout, with limited capacity to absorb a large concentration of vehicles.

The system activates when occupancy approaches 80% to prevent vehicles from continuing to advance until there is no space available. Reaching an observation point does not guarantee entry or parking.

Cala Banyalbufar and Cala Estellencs, also full

The Directorate General of Emergencies has reported that the car parks of Cala Banyalbufar and Cala Estellencs are full and closed to new vehicle entry.

Access to Port del Canonge has also been closed. The authorities request that you do not travel to these locations and remind you that parking on the verges, occupying forest paths, or blocking corridors reserved for emergency services is prohibited.

Vehicles parked incorrectly may be fined and removed if they hinder traffic or an eventual evacuation.

Access to Port de Valldemossa closed

Access to the Port of Valldemossa is also closed. The restriction affects the Ma-1131, the road connecting the urban center with the port.

At the same time, in Valldemossa, a recirculation system has been activated to divert vehicles towards Sóller and Deià and prevent them from continuing towards the busiest sections of the Serra.

Exceptions for residents, workers, and other accredited journeys are subject to the instructions of the agents present at the controls.

Closures in ses Salines, el Trenc, Sant Elm, and Randa

Restrictions are no longer concentrated solely on the Ma-10. Emergencies has communicated the activation of controls and closures in various coastal access points and high points of Mallorca.

The situation is as follows:

• Ses Salines and El Trenc: road closed up to the El Trenc parking lot.
• Cap de les Salines: access closed.
• Sant Elm: restricted access by the road coming from Andratx.
• Puig de Randa: access road closed.

The measures aim to prevent concentrations of vehicles in spaces with little capacity for parking, circulation or evacuation.

Formentor is approaching its limit

In the first official assessment of the operation, made public after 1 p.m., Emergencies had reinforced control at Formentor Cape because occupancy was approaching its maximum. Gárriz announced that it would probably be necessary to take action if the arrival of vehicles continued.

The official operation foresees controls on the Ma-2210, both at the start of the road and at the junction with the Ma-2200 in the direction of the Colomer viewpoint and Formentor lighthouse.

Authorities recommend not to start the journey towards Formentor without first checking the status of access roads.

Traffic closure in Santa Ponça

The Calvià Town Hall has reported the traffic closure on Jaume I Avenue, from the Santa Ponça square roundabout to Lisboa street. The closure includes access to and from the car park via Puig de Massanella street.

A unit from the operation will be at this point until the eclipse ends. Municipal authorities recommend avoiding private vehicles if not essential and following the Local Police's instructions.

The Calvià operation also foresees controls or restrictions at:

• Cala Figuera road, at roundabout 8, in the direction of Son Ferrer and El Toro.
• Jardí Square, in Santa Ponça.
• The Costa de la Calma roundabout, at the height of Bella Vista.
• Access to Portals Vells.
• The roundabouts accessing El Toro.

The measures can be modified or extended according to the evolution of traffic and attendance.

The first line of Playa de Palma, closed

The Local Police of Palma has closed the first line of Playa de Palma to private vehicle traffic at 9 a.m.

Around 70,000 people are expected to gather in the area during the eclipse. The City Council has already closed the exits of the Ma-19 affected by the operation, which only residents and other authorized persons can access.

The first hours of the operation have proceeded in a "controlled and calm" manner, according to the councilor for Public Function, Llorenç Bauzá. The City Council had not detected large crowds or incidents during the first part of the operation.

The operation is as follows:

• From 9 a.m.: first line closed to private traffic, with established exceptions.
• From 12 p.m.: closure of exits 6, 7A and 8 of the Ma-19 towards Llucmajor.
• Exits 10 and 11: traffic controls.
• Alternative access: on foot, by bicycle or by public transport.
• Public transport: special line 00-Eclipsi between Plaça d’Espanya and Balneari 5 of l'Arenal, with an estimated frequency of five minutes.

Restrictions may intensify during the afternoon if the influx increases.

The first assessment: two minor incidents by 1 p.m.

Of the between 205 and 210 incidents registered in the Balearic Islands until 1 p.m., only two were related to the eclipse operation. Both were minor traffic issues.

Gárriz highlighted that the day began calmly and that all planned resources are active. According to the director general, there are more than 1,400 personnel deployed, not counting local police, and nearly 3,000 people involved in security management.

The operation includes the State security forces and bodies, local police, the DGT, emergency services, and a capacity control mechanism.

Emergencies has even detected less traffic than usual in some areas, a fact attributed to the responsible behavior of the population.

Why have the restrictions been brought forward?

The general measures were planned to start at 3 p.m., but the Eclipbal protocol already foresaw that the schedule would be variable depending on parking occupancy, capacities, and traffic conditions.

When an area approaches 80% capacity, restrictions and diversions are initiated to act in sufficient time. The objective is to prevent drivers from parking on the shoulders or in places that could impede the passage of emergency vehicles or hinder an evacuation.

The measures are applied in coordination with the DGT, the Civil Guard, and local police forces and are also announced via road signs.

What other roads may be restricted?

The official device foresees controls in other points of Mallorca that can still be activated or expanded according to the evolution of the day:

• Deià: camí de la Cala, carretera de Cala Deià i accés a la Foradada.
• Sóller: Monument roundabout and confluence of the Ma-10 with the Ma-11.
• Fornalutx: access to the Ma-10 from the junction with the Ma-2120.
• Caimari: Ma-10 from the Creu de Caimari.
• Pollença: Ma-10 and Formentor Cape road.
• Artà: road to the hermitage of Betlem.
• Felanitx: road to Puig de Sant Salvador.
• Petra: path to the Bonany hermitage.
• Llucmajor: access to Maioris, Puig de Ros and Cap Blanc.

Drivers must follow the instructions of the agents and the provisional signage, even if the specific point does not initially appear among the announced closures.

Major roads are not included in the general closures

The main communication routes of Mallorca do not, in principle, form part of the general road closures. They are maintained as connectivity axes and to guarantee the passage of emergency services.

Not included in the general restrictions:

• Ma-13, the Inca motorway.
• Ma-15, the Manacor road.
• Ma-30, the ring road of Palma.
• Ma-1, the western highway.
• Ma-19, the Llucmajor highway, excluding the exits affected by the Playa de Palma operation.

This does not mean that these routes are exempt from traffic jams or specific measures. Authorities may modify traffic flow if the situation so requires.

The restrictions affect all motor vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds. There are exceptions for certain groups and justified journeys, but documentation must be shown at checkpoints and the final decision is subject to the agents' instructions.

Residents

Residents must prove they live in the affected area by means of their ID card or a residency certificate.

People with a home in the area

They must present documentation that proves ownership or use, such as the IBI (property tax), the deed, or electricity or water bills in the name of the person who wishes to access it.

Workers

Workers in restricted areas must justify their movement with their employment contract, a payslip, or a certificate from the company.

Accommodation clients

Clients of hotels or other accommodations located within restricted areas must present proof of reservation. Vehicles performing only escort or pick-up duties may not remain parked during their stay.

Restaurant clients

They must prove the reservation and have guaranteed parking. Vehicles only performing escort or pick-up tasks cannot remain parked during their stay.

Public transport and essential services

Taxis, VTC vehicles, TIB network buses, emergency vehicles, scheduled medical transport, and essential public services may circulate.

Goods providers cannot access the roads during periods when they are formally closed. Vehicles already within restricted areas may leave.

And bicycles?

General restrictions refer to motor vehicles. Therefore, bicycles are not affected by the general prohibition, without prejudice to the specific controls that each town hall may establish.

Platja de Palma can be accessed on foot, by bicycle or by public transport without the credential required for private vehicles.

New cuts in Menorca and Ibiza

In Menorca, traffic at Punta Nati is restricted from 8 a.m., as planned. Access to Cap de Cavalleria has also been closed. Additionally, the Tramuntana road and the Mercadal-el Toro car park are closed to traffic.

In Ibiza, the Cala d'Hort car park is full and closed, but this limitation does not equate to a general road closure. The section between Plaça de la Mar and Carrer de la Punta de l'Embarcador, in Cala Tarida, is also cut off.

The Consell d'Eivissa anticipates a high concentration of people and vehicles in Benirràs, na Xamena, el Caló de l'Illa, Cala Xarraca, Portinatx, and the Moscarter lighthouse. Access to these points may be restricted if the influx increases.

In Formentera, no road closures have been reported at the moment. The plan foresees regulating access to Cap de Barbaria and Cala Saona if the influx makes it necessary.

DGT Recommendations

Traffic recommends:

• Avoid unnecessary travel.
• Check the road conditions before leaving.
• Do not head to car parks or accesses that are already marked as closed.
• Do not stop on the sidewalk or shoulders to observe the eclipse.
• Do not look at the phenomenon or use solar observation glasses while driving.
• Increase the safety distance.
• Pay special attention to pedestrians and cyclists.
• Do not start the return immediately after the eclipse if it can be avoided.

The DGT warns that the return trip may be the most delicate moment of the day: arrival at observation points is staggered, but many people may try to leave simultaneously after the phenomenon.

Before leaving, the administrations recommend consulting:

• The incident viewer and the DGT cameras.
• The road information channels of the Consell de Mallorca.
• The official Eclipsi Segur website of the Government.
• Emergencies 112 notices.
• The official channels of the affected town councils.
• The 011 telephone for road information.

This information will be updated during the day as official sources communicate new closures, full parking lots, or changes in access.
