Selva recovers the memory of the Oratory of Christ the King with a participatory project
The initiative, led by Raquel Barceló and supported by the IEB and the City Council, combines historical research and citizen participation.
PalmSelva has taken a step forward in recovering and showcasing one of its most emblematic spaces. The Oratory of Christ the King is the focus of a new research project entitled The Oratory of Christ the King: history, memory and living heritage who wants to rescue its history, its heritage value and, above all, its living memory linked to the people.
The project, led by Raquel Barceló, has been selected by the Balearic Institute of Studies (IEB) as part of its research grant program and has the support of the Selva Town Council. During the presentation, Barceló emphasized that the oratory "is part of the town's identity" and that the goal is not only to delve deeper into its historical and archaeological value, but also to recover the voices and experiences of the people who have kept it alive over time. The presentation, which brought together residents in a friendly and participatory atmosphere, was conceived as an intergenerational gathering. Amid conversations and hot chocolate, attendees shared memories and impressions, while the team explained the next steps in the research and invited everyone to actively collaborate. "The memory of each resident is a key piece in reconstructing our history," they stressed.
The mayor of Selva, Joan Rotger, emphasized that initiatives like this strengthen the bond between heritage and the community, and reminded everyone that preserving the memory of the oratory is a collective responsibility. Similarly, the Director General of Culture, Llorenç Perelló, highlighted the importance of supporting projects that combine academic rigor with community participation. The City Council has encouraged the residents of Selva to get involved in this effort to continue restoring a key site in the town's history.
