Balearics prepares a special protocol to manage the impact of the total solar eclipse
Information campaigns will be deployed in four languages to prevent eye injuries and risks associated with high temperatures
PalmThe Government of the Balearic Islands today held the second meeting of the Plenary of the Commission for the Management of Actions Related to the Total Solar Eclipse of 2026, created in December and formally constituted on January 15. During that month, the groups for Mobility, Prevention, Civil Protection and Environmental Risk Management; Public Health; Communication and Tourism, and Scientific Dissemination identified needs and potential problems and submitted proposals to the plenary.
Among the main lines of action, the informative prevention and self-protection campaigns promoted by the Directorate General of Communication stand out, in coordination with the Directorates General of Emergencies and Interior and Public Health, to warn about the risks of eye injuries and the effects of high temperatures. The campaigns will be disseminated in four languages (Catalan, Spanish, English, and German).
Although no promotional actions will be carried out to attract new visitors, the Directorate General of Tourism will launch an awareness campaign aimed at visitors.
To ensure optimal coordination of the phenomenon, the Mobility, Prevention, Civil Protection, and Environmental Risk Management group is already working, together with the Scientific Dissemination group, on a mapping of the Balearic Islands to detect the points with the highest and lowest visibility of the eclipse, in order to anticipate. During the eclipse, the Government will activate the Territorial Plan of the Balearic Islands (Platerbal), which will have a specific protocol (Eclipbal) to guarantee the safety of citizens and visitors.
In the outreach and educational field, teaching materials adapted to each cycle and scientific outreach activities are prepared, in addition to the 'Science for All' event, scheduled from May 7 to 9 at the UIB. Likewise, the Government will set up a specific webpage with all the information related to the Total Solar Eclipse of 2026.
The Government's objective is to anticipate risks, ensure a coordinated response from public services, and facilitate safe observation of the phenomenon, while highlighting the scientific and educational opportunity that this event represents.
