PalmaThe Consell de Mallorca inaugurated this Friday the new Hunting Center of Mallorca, located on the Sa Mola Vella estate, in Son Macià, an facility intended to promote the practice of hunting and its role in land management. The opening coincided with World Environment Day.

The center, which occupies an area of 46.7 hectares, is presented as a space to bring hunting activity closer to citizens and educational centers. The inauguration included an open day in which representatives from the hunting sector, associations of the elderly, and primary school students participated.

The center is located on a property in Manacor

The event was attended by the president of the Council, Llorenç Galmés; the Minister of Environment, Pedro Bestard; and the insular director of Hunting, Sebastià Perelló. During the presentation, Galmés defended that the center is born with the will to become a space open to society and to make known the relationship between hunting and the conservation of the rural environment. According to the insular institution, the facilities should serve to explain the contribution of hunting activity to land stewardship, animal population control, and the preservation of certain rural traditions. The Council maintains that hunting is part of the natural environment management tools and that the new facility will allow this function to be disseminated among the population.

The launch of the center comes in a context of recurring debate about the role of hunting in biodiversity conservation. Although the hunting sector claims its participation in the management of species and habitats, hunting-related policies continue to generate controversy among environmental and animal defense organizations, which question whether this activity is presented as a conservation tool. The inaugural event brought together nearly a hundred people in a public outreach event with which the Council aims to consolidate the new center as a reference space for the promotion of hunting culture in Mallorca.
