PalmaThe water reserves of the Balearic Islands have increased by one point during the month of October, rising from 36% to 37%, according to data published by the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle. The improvement occurred in Mallorca and Menorca, while Ibiza maintains the same level of reserves as in September, at 33%.
Despite this slight increase, the situation remains worse than it was a year ago. In October 2025, the water reserves for the entire archipelago stood at 44%, seven points above the current record.
By island, Mallorca has gone from 36% to 37% and Menorca from 38% to 39%. Ibiza, on the other hand, continues with reserves at 33%.
Regarding drought scenarios, three demand units remain in an alert situation: Artà, es Pla, and Manacor-Felanitx. These areas represent 22.5% of the territory of the Balearic Islands. Six other units are in pre-alert—Menorca, Migjorn, Palma-Alcúdia, Tramuntana Nord, Tramuntana Sud, and Ibiza—while Formentera is the only territory in a situation of normality.
During October, two scenario changes occurred: Migjorn moved from alert to pre-alert, and Tramuntana Sud left the state of normality to enter pre-alert.
Rainfall exceeds the usual average by 33%
The increase in reserves comes after an October that was rainier than usual in the Balearic Islands. According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the average precipitation was 105 liters per square meter, 33% above the 79 liters usually expected for this month.
Rainfall has been especially abundant in the Pityusic Islands. Ibiza has accumulated an average of 232 liters per square meter, compared to the usual 77, while in Formentera 213 liters have been recorded, almost five times more than the reference average of 44 liters.
In Mallorca, 93 liters per square meter were collected, compared to the usual 80. Menorca, on the other hand, remained slightly below the average, with 62 liters compared to the usual 67.
Despite the October rains, the reserves have not experienced a more significant increase. In fact, the hydrological drought index has risen from 0.342 in September to 0.371 in October, a value also higher than that of the same months of the previous two years.
Forecast for improvement in November
Looking ahead to November, the Ministry expects water reserves to continue increasing in the Balearic Islands, taking into account the current situation and the time of year. Nevertheless, it does not expect changes in the drought scenarios for the different demand units.
Regarding temperatures, October has been a warm month in the archipelago, with an average of 20 degrees and a positive anomaly of 1.2 degrees compared to the usual values.
The Ministry continues to monitor the evolution of water resources, especially in areas that remain on alert, and reminds of the importance of making responsible use of water.
