The Council wants "a common front" to decide on Palma airport
The new DORA foresees 1.4 million more passengers at Son Sant Joan, a decision that Ginard describes as a "policy of fait accompli"
PalmaThe Minister of Tourism of the Council of Mallorca, Guillem Ginard, believes it is time to form a "common front, setting aside party acronyms" to decide on "the main gateway for passengers and tourists to Mallorca," the Son Sant Joan airport. He requests this, he said, to "reach an agreement for the good of an island that has limits and limited natural resources."
Ginard made these statements following the approval, this Tuesday, of the newAirport Regulation Document (DORA III) by the Council of Ministers, which he described as a "policy of accomplished facts." The document provides for Aena's investments between 2027 and 2031 and will mean an increase of 1.4 million more passengers at Palma airport, which in the Balearic Islands as a whole will reach 2.12 million more travelers.
The head of Tourism has criticized that Mallorca is treated "like an Aena cash register" and has lamented that "a matter as important as the main gateway to Mallorca is decided solely from Madrid and that we have no decision-making power here over Palma airport."
Ginard has again pointed out the "contradictions of the Socialist Party," after the Spanish government lifted the veto on the processing of the Balearic bill for airport co-management. He reproached the socialists for participating in mobilizations in favor of tourist containment in Mallorca, while the state executive endorses a plan that will allow for an increase in the number of passengers. "It is not an honest or loyal attitude and it generates distrust towards institutions and politics," he stated.
Faced with this situation, the island minister has insisted on the need for "true co-management" that allows the institutions of the Islands to intervene in decisions regarding Son Sant Joan and set limits on its growth.
This Sunday, September 20th, the Platform against the Airport Expansion has called for a demonstration to demand a halt to the policies that encourage the arrival of more visitors to the Balearic Islands.
