PalmaThe storm Adam has caused the partial collapse of the roof of the old Iris cinema, in Palma, and has forced the preventive closure of three classrooms in two municipal nursery schools. The incident occurred this Tuesday and did not cause any personal injury, according to the Palma City Council.
The Palma Fire Department and Urban Planning technicians have traveled to the old Iris Cinema to assess the damage. According to the first inspection, there is no risk to the surrounding area or the neighboring educational center. To guarantee safety, the perimeter has been cordoned off and a new visit by the Fire Department and Urban Inspection services is scheduled for this Wednesday.
The storm has also affected two municipal nursery schools. In Son Roca, the fall of a tree has forced one classroom to close, while in El Molinar, the heavy rains have caused the temporary closure of two more classrooms. The municipal Infrastructure services have traveled to Son Roca to assess the damage.
Despite the incidents, both centers were able to open this Tuesday and maintain normal teaching activities. The affected classrooms will remain closed as a precaution until the damage has been repaired.
23 interventions by the Fire Department since Saturday
Between Saturday and Tuesday, the Palma Fire Department carried out 23 interventions related to the storm. Municipal services continue to work in a coordinated manner to address incidents, assess damage, and ensure safety.
The DANA led the City Council to activate the Palma Municipal Territorial Emergency Plan (PlaterPalma) in the red phase, following the warning of extraordinary danger due to heavy rain issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Given the favorable evolution of the weather, the plan moved to alert zero on Monday.
Among the recorded incidents were fallen trees at various points in the city, such as La Teulera, Son Cladera, the Mollet counter-pier, and the streets of Joan Crespí, Cala Llombards, Fra Joan Llabrés, and Sevilla.
The heavy rains also caused intermittent traffic light outages in various locations in Palma, such as Avinguda d'Alexandre Rosselló, Carrer d'Aragó, Avinguda d'Adolfo Suárez, Plaça del Pont, and Passeig d'Andrea Doria. Most of these incidents have already been resolved, although municipal services are still working in some areas to fully restore the operation of the traffic light network.
Parks, libraries and municipal facilities reopen
The improvement in weather conditions has allowed for the progressive recovery of normal activity at municipal spaces that had closed preventively during the episode of heavy rains. Since this Tuesday morning, parks, gardens, sports facilities, libraries, and neighborhood centers have reopened.
However, Can Terrers and the Ribera park remain closed while their safety conditions are being assessed.
During the night from Sunday to Monday, the Germans Escalas municipal sports center hosted 36 people from settlements located in flood-prone areas of Palma.
The City Council has highlighted the coordination between emergency services and municipal areas to address the consequences of the storm and progressively resolve incidents. The Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, monitored the evolution of the DANA throughout Sunday and Monday through meetings of the municipal Civil Protection commission and the technical advisory committee.
