The Firo of Sóller revives with emotion the victory of the people of Sóller against the corsairs

PalmThe Firó de Sóller has once again turned the streets and squares of the municipality into the setting for one of Mallorca's most emblematic historical reenactments this Monday, May 11. Thousands of people have participated in a day marked by tradition, gunpowder, and emotion, recalling the heroic defense of the people of Sóller against the attack of Turkish and Algerian corsairs that occurred in 1561.

The events began at 10:00 AM with the offering of crowns to the Monument to the Heroes of May 11. Subsequently, a mass was celebrated in Can Tamany with the attendance of the Valentes Dones, historical figures, authorities, and the Xeremiers of Sóller.

The historical reenactment began at 3:30 PM with the traditional ringing of bells announcing the arrival of enemy ships. The peasants gathered in the Plaza de los Estiradors, where the Valentes Dones encouraged the defenders before the battle. Half an hour later, in the square, Captain Angelats commended himself to the Mare de Déu de la Victòria and shouted the now iconic “To the fight, sollericos!”, while the bandits arrived ready to defend the town. The first major confrontation took place at 5:30 PM on Can Generós beach, where the sollericos managed to repel the first Saracen landing attempt. Even so, the invaders managed to enter through en Repic beach at, establishing a bridgehead that intensified the battle.

As night fell, the invaders will manage to enter the town by simulating the looting of houses and the church. Later, King Ulutx Ali will proclaim himself victorious before the Houses of the Town, but the Saracen joy will not last long. The peasants, regrouped in the street of the Moon, guided by Captain Angelats, will initiate the definitive counteroffensive that will culminate in the Solleric victory.
