Unemployment falls by 7% in the Balearic Islands
February ends with 27,339 unemployed, 2,068 fewer than a year ago, while contracts rise compared to January but fall year-on-year.
PalmUnemployment continues to fall in the Balearic Islands at the start of the tourist season. The archipelago ended February with 27,339 unemployed people, 7.03% fewer than a year ago and 2.52% fewer than in January. At the same time, Social Security affiliation rose to 505,280 workers, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.97% and a monthly increase of 2.75%. According to data published this Tuesday by the Ministries of Labor and Inclusion and Social Security, in absolute terms, unemployment has decreased by 706 people compared to January and by 2,068 compared to February 2025. As for affiliation, it increased by 13,529, an increase of 4.
The profile of the unemployed maintains the gender gap: 15,560 are women and 11,779 are men. By sector, the bulk of unemployment is concentrated in services, with 20,357 people, far ahead of construction (3,095), industry (1,187), and agriculture (330).
February also saw 22,553 contracts signed in the Islands. This figure is 5.45% lower than a year ago—1,301 fewer contracts—but an improvement of 12.69% compared to January, with 2,540 more contracts. Of the total, 15,514 were permanent and 7,039 were temporary.
The national government is adding members to its social security system, but unemployment is rising slightly.
Across Spain, Social Security gained 97,004 members in February, reaching a total of 21.67 million contributors. However, unemployment rose slightly, by 3,584 people, to a total of 2,442,646 unemployed. The boost to employment nationwide came mainly from education, with 30,142 new members; hospitality, with 22,932; and construction, with 17,478 new jobs. In the last year, the Spanish labor market has added 474,482 workers and reduced unemployment by 150,803 people, reaching its lowest level for a February since 2008, according to the Ministry of Labor.
