PalmThe Manacor City Council announced this Friday that it will take legal action against the implementation of the single school zone, after meeting with the management teams of the municipality's preschool, primary, and early childhood education centers (ages 0-3). The meeting was attended by the mayor, Miquel Oliver; the Education Delegate, Ferran Montero; technical staff from the Education Department; and representatives from public and private schools in Manacor, Portocristo, Illot, and Son Macià. During the meeting, both the management teams and the City Council expressed their discontent that the change was approved without any prior dialogue with the educational community or the City Council. According to reports, the schools only received information after the measure had already been formalized.

The Education Delegate, Ferran Montero, explained that the City Council has formally requested a meeting with Regional Minister Antoni Vera to ask for clarification, but has not yet received a response. Given this situation, it has also been agreed to send a joint letter to the Regional Ministry requesting an urgent meeting with representatives from the municipality and the schools. The new regulations entail the elimination of the current school zoning system for the municipality, which until now has been divided into four areas: Manacor city, Portocristo, Illot, and Son Macià. This system has thus far ensured that children can attend school in their immediate surroundings, fostering proximity and connection to the local area. School management teams have expressed concern about the risk of dismantling the current balanced schooling model, the increase in class sizes, the difficulties for families, and the lack of guarantees regarding school transportation. It has also been noted that other municipalities, such as Andratx, Calvià, Santa Margalida, and Selva, will maintain their zoning, so the Manacor City Council will request explanations. Furthermore, the creation of an analysis laboratory has been proposed to evaluate the effects of the measure and ensure that it does not disrupt the educational balance that Manacor has championed since 2015, a recognized model for preventing segregation and promoting diversity and school cohesion.
