Calvià wants to organize a San Fermín festival with a running of the bulls from the public Galatzó estate
The City Council wants to promote the festival in Capdellà in July 2026 and promote it as a new tourist attraction
CalviàThe Calvià Town Council has approved the necessary permits and budget allocation to organize a San Fermín festival in July 2026 featuring a bull run with cows from the Galatzó public estate in the Capdellà area. The project will be officially presented next January at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid. According to a statement from the Town Council, the initiative aims to revive a tradition that, according to municipal records, dates back to 1866 and is linked to the town's bullfighting history and the figure of the bullfighter known as Capellanet, who was born in Capdellà. The animals that would participate in the bull run are one bull and seven Mallorcan cows, which were released onto the Galatzó estate in early December to contribute to natural vegetation clearing and the prevention of forest fires. According to the City Council, the cattle have adapted quickly to the environment and possess a "suitable" temperament to play a leading role in the festival. The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, expressed his satisfaction with the project, which he described as an initiative that combines "festival, tradition, and memory" and allows, he said, the municipality to showcase a little-known past. Amengual also highlighted the festival's potential as a tourist attraction, as it would complement the municipality's established offerings. For his part, the Deputy Mayor for the Environment and driving force behind the proposal, Juan Thomàs, assured that the City Council will take all necessary measures to ensure the running of the bulls takes place "in a way that is respectful to the animals" and without causing them, he stated, "any negative emotional impact." Thomàs even went so far as to describe the activity as a "zero stress animal" bull run.
In this regard, the City Council is studying the possibility of creating its own cattle ranch in Galatzó, which, according to the Council, could become the first ranch of Mallorcan-breed bulls. Thomàs also indicated that genetic experts from the University of the Balearic Islands have identified a recessive gene in this breed originating from the ancient European aurochs, an extinct ancestor of modern cattle.
The councilor for Capdellà, Jaime Bujosa, explained that the project will be presented to the residents of the village and that work is already underway on the route of the bull run. Bujosa emphasized that the last documented bull run in the town dates back to the 19th century and defended the initiative as a way to revive a historical tradition and honor figures linked to the world of bullfighting. The running of the bulls is scheduled for July 6th and, according to the municipal tourism director, Elisa Monserrat, it will be promoted at Fitur as a new attraction for the town. Monserrat confirmed that several bullfighting clubs from across Spain have already been contacted and are interested in visiting Calvià for the festival.
