CCOO joins the complaints about the heat at Palma airport and demands urgent measures
The union denounces temperatures above 28 degrees in the check-in areas and assures that ground staff have already suffered heatstroke, while demanding more shade, water points, and breaks
PalmaComplaints about the high temperature at Palma Airport are gaining strength. If a few weeks ago it was UGT who denounced the conditions under which part of the staff works during heatwaves, now CCOO has also joined the claims and assures that the situation puts workers' health at risk.
The union calls for "brave" action from the Balearic Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Ibassal) and demands that Aena adopt immediate measures. According to the delegate for occupational risk prevention at Groundforce, Margarita Martínez, temperatures above 28 degrees have been recorded in the check-in area, with humidity close to 70%, despite the complaints that had already been filed. CCOO assures, however, that the situation is even more delicate on the tarmac. Martínez states that some workers have suffered heatstroke and that some have even required medical attention. For this reason, the union calls for more shaded areas, water points accessible throughout the day, and for the breaks stipulated in the protocols during extreme heat episodes to be respected.
The deficiencies, according to the union, also affect other areas of the airport. It denounces air conditioning problems in the offices and the commercial area and attributes a large part of these incidents to the works being carried out at Son Sant Joan. In some areas, it assures, the doors remain open, which facilitates the entry of hot air, while the air conditioning system is insufficient.
CCOO warns that, if effective measures are not taken, it will study calling for mobilizations to denounce a situation it considers unsustainable in the middle of summer.
