PalmaThe Minister of Labor, Public Function and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, has asked Aena to reopen the canteen at Palma airport so that it can function as a climate shelter for workers. The request is part of the prevention campaign against high temperatures launched this summer by the Balearic Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Ibassal). Regarding Son Sant Joan, the Executive has also established communication channels between Aena and ground service companieswith the objective of responding to the problems derived from working conditions during heat episodes.

The campaign also includes actions in other sectors particularly exposed to heat, such as construction. Ibassal supervises outdoor work, especially tasks involving physical exertion, and checks that companies comply with prevention protocols against sun exposure. As part of the campaign, it has distributed over 2,000 caps to protect workers from the sun.

In total, the agency has made 312 visits to companies since the start of the campaign. 191 visits have been specific to control risks derived from high temperatures and 121 have been to jobs with asbestos, which also include the prevention of thermal stress. Cabrer has emphasized that the initiative aims to raise awareness among companies and workers about the risks of heat and to disseminate prevention measures.

Information campaign

The Government has launched an awareness campaign on intercity buses, trains, and metros, and has updated the decalogue on heat and social media outreach materials with recommendations on how to act in case of heatstroke. The minister confirmed the data provided by the Ministry of Health, according to which no heat-related deaths have been registered in the Balearic Islands this summer.

Finally, Cabrer explained that the Government continues to work to respond to the request from construction sector workers to postpone the start of the workday during the hottest days. As pointed out, contact has already been made with the town councils, as noise hour restrictions are a municipal responsibility.
