They detect a dwelling in Manacor where up to 30 people lived together

ManacorThe National Police and the Government's Housing Inspection Service have detected an overcrowded and precarious dwelling in Manacor where, according to the occupants, up to 30 people had lived together at certain times.

The inspection was carried out in August and made it possible to verify the conditions of the property, which was unfinished and showed various damages. Inside, there were up to six partitioned rooms, some with curtains, several kitchens, and three bathrooms for common use.

Part of the outdoor space was also used for sleeping. Specifically, the occupants explained to the agents that up to six people had slept under a roof located in the property's courtyard. A staircase with various construction props used as a railing and different rooms with holes and other damage were also located.

At the time of the inspection, there were seven people inside the property, who were identified by the National Police. However, according to what they explained, the number of residents had been much higher at other times, up to 30 people.

The property has a cadastral area of 228 square meters: 90 correspond to housing; 103 to storage, and 35 to parking. According to the Government, however, the entire surface was used as housing.

The occupants stated that they paid between 80 and 100 euros per person to the owner, regardless of the number of people in each room. This also included the people who slept in the outdoor space.

The Government has opened proceedings to subsequently initiate a sanctioning file. Overcrowding of a dwelling is considered a very serious infringement according to the Housing Law of the Balearic Islands and can lead to fines of between 30,001 and 90,000 euros. The Department of Housing has pointed out that this is not the first case of overcrowding detected in Mallorca and has highlighted the importance of citizen collaboration to locate these types of situations.
