How to care for children's atopic skin
Good hydration, soap-free soaps, and not abusing either heating or air conditioning are some of the recommendations.

BarcelonaAtopic skin is the most common inflammatory disease in childhood. Symptoms include dry skin and eczema or red, itchy welts that interfere with sleep in babies and children. As Asunción Vicente, a dermatologist at San Juan de Dios Hospital, points out, these symptoms usually appear before the age of one.
What daily care is necessary for atopic skin?
Vicente differentiates between "basic care," which would include "daily bathing with lukewarm (never hot) water, a mild Syndet atopy soap (soapless), and good moisturizing immediately afterward, while the skin is still damp." The doctor emphasizes that these children—as well as the general population—"should lather with their hands and not sponges, as they accumulate moisture and, therefore, microbes." She also points out that pharmacy moisturizers—"which are all fine"—should be applied only to eczema-free areas, while medications prescribed by a pediatrician or dermatologist should be used for eczema. The latter would be what Vicente calls "specific eczema care." One last note: "We should avoid colognes and creams with strong perfumes."
What precautions need to be taken at the environmental level?
The recommendations, Vicente explains, are "not to overuse the heating or air conditioning, as they dry out the environment; try to avoid carpets, clothing, toys, stuffed animals, curtains, etc. that accumulate dust; and ventilate the house thoroughly, among other things." However, the sun can be beneficial, provided you protect yourself.
Can they swim in pools and in the sea?
The dermatologist explains that they can, but if the child has severe eczema, she would recommend not going. Afterward, "depending on each child's sensitivity," it's important to see how their skin reacts to seawater and pool water, "because it may be counterproductive." Showers should also be taken immediately "to remove the sea salt or chlorine from the pool as quickly as possible."
