PalmMore than 60 residents of Son Sardina met this Tuesday at the neighborhood center to discuss the Government's law that provides for reclassify 3,500 hectares of rural land to build protected housing. The residents of this neighborhood, one of the most affected by this law, have expressed their concern about the urban development project promoted by the PP and Vox parties, which is now in its final stages of parliamentary processing. "It's a disaster," notes one of the residents, Tònia Llabrés, who nevertheless highlights the warm reception the meeting received. "People from other neighborhoods even came to see how we do it, how we organize ourselves, and learn how to do it themselves and gather information," she explains, adding that residents from Secar de la Real, Establiments, La Indioteria, and La Garriga attended.

The meeting, under the slogan "Let's stop the macro-urbanization of the city," focused on sharing strategies and defining the organization. "The first thing is to mobilize on July 7—the day on which the protests are expected to take place." the final approval of the law– on the street, in front of Parliament, with as many people as possible," Llabrés emphasizes. "It's obvious it will be approved," he laments, but insists that things must be organized and small events "with a lot of noise" are planned. "Now we have to warm up with the neighbors," he emphasizes.

Meeting attendees.

Residents also complain that the PP and Vox law would add approximately 4,050 residents to the current 2,862 in Son Sardina. This would more than double the neighborhood's population—to approximately 6,900—with the same current facilities and services, and the introduction of more than 3,000 new cars.

Other neighborhood meetings

Given the concern generated by the PP and Vox law, other neighborhoods in Ciutat de Palma are also organizing meetings to address the issue. The Son Sardina residents' meeting was the first, but others are planned for this week. The Palma Residents' Federation has convened a meeting this Wednesday, also at 7 p.m., at the Son Rapinya community center; and on Thursday the 3rd, at the same time, the meeting will take place in Son Cànaves Park.
