The Palma City Council will allocate €2.2 million to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment of Carnatge and its shoreline. The funding comes in part from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). The Palma Governing Board approved the project proposal this Wednesday. The objective is the protection, restoration, and environmental enhancement of this coastal area, in order to strengthen its conservation and improve its integration as a key natural space for the municipality, as reported at a press conference by the deputy municipal spokesperson, Llorenç Bauzá. The contract is structured in two separate packages. The first, with an estimated duration of 17 months, will be managed by the Parks and Gardens department and will focus on natural preservation, environmental restoration, and the improvement of green spaces across an area exceeding 200,000 square meters.

The planned actions include the restoration of the natural environment and landscape, the conservation and recovery of flora and fauna, the removal of invasive species, the adaptation of street furniture and children's play areas to current regulations in the urban zone, as well as the signage of internal routes.

The second project, with a budget of 1.4 million euros and an estimated execution period of six months, includes the renovation and improvement of the network of internal paths in the Carnatge, in addition to work on the drainage system, access points, fencing, and street furniture.

Specifically, the paving of existing paths will be renewed and widened, the four access points—Establiments path, Can Pastilla path, and two on Dentol street—will be improved, and the routes will be marked to ensure the safety of users and coexistence with the natural habitat.

Following this first phase, there will be a second, also valued at 2.2 million euros, which will include the restoration of the former military barracks and the cleaning of the seabed, bringing the total planned investment for Carnaje to 4.4 million euros.

Water Management Plan

Furthermore, the Governing Board also approved Palma's Sustainable Water Management Plan this Wednesday, which establishes a set of short- and long-term investments and measures to guarantee the efficient, sustainable, and balanced use of the municipality's water resources. This is a "clear roadmap, based on sustainability, efficiency, and improvements to strategic infrastructure, that guarantees the long-term water supply." In this regard, the Plan includes several investments, primarily by the municipal company Emaya, with the aim of increasing water availability and reducing consumption and losses through efficiency improvements. To this end, it incorporates measures focused on water conservation, reuse, the implementation of separate sewer systems, sustainable urban drainage, and the modernization of hydraulic infrastructure.
