Santa Maria approves supporting the Balearic Pensioners' Movement's Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP), with the PP voting against.

PalmThe motion supporting the Popular Legislative Initiative for the creation of a supplementary pension system for those whose pensions fall below the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), promoted by the Balearic Islands Pensioners' Movement, was approved this Thursday by the Santa Maria City Council, with the People's Party (PP) voting against it. The City Council urges the Government to establish a regional social supplement to ensure that no pension falls below the SMI until the State implements the equalization process.

In the explanatory statement, the Santa Maria City Council values ​​the initiative because they believe this supplement is also of great importance regarding women and gender justice, since the majority of low pensions are received by women who have worked fragmented hours and earned lower wages than men throughout their lives. "From the City Council, we believe that the fight against poverty and social vulnerability also involves supporting courageous citizen initiatives like this Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP), which appeal to intergenerational solidarity and the strengthening of our self-government in matters of social welfare," the City Council stated.

They also acknowledged the work of the pensioners' movement in the Balearic Islands and, in particular, the Balearic Coordinator for the Defense of Public Pensions, for their "commitment and perseverance in defending the rights of older people." Finally, they pledged to forward this agreement to the Bureau of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Council of Mallorca, the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (FELIB), and the Balearic Coordinator for the Defense of Public Pensions. It should be recalled that Parliament admitted the proposal for processing last October. The proposal was registered on September 10th with the argument of promoting a supplement for the lowest pensions, in order to ensure that pensioners in the Islands can cope with the enormous increase in the cost of living occurring in the Balearic Islands.
