The forgotten document that situates the birth of Can Picafort 115 years ago
A research by Pep Servera places the legal birth of the nucleus on June 2, 1911, when the Civil Government authorized the creation of a colony within the possession of Son Bauló
PalmaA historical investigation by Pep Servera has made it possible to document a key date in the history of Can Picafort. According to the documentation located by the researcher, on June 2, 1911, the civil governor of the Balearic Islands, Agustín de la Serna, officially authorized the creation of a colony within the possession of Son Bauló, between the "clot de l'Aigua Dolça" and the "clot de l'Alga", also known as "clot d'en Barret".
The finding was announced this Monday, coinciding with the 115th anniversary of the event, in a conference held in the multipurpose room of the Can Picafort library, which was filled with neighbors and people interested in delving into the origins of the municipality.
According to Servera, before the authorization, some buildings had already been erected with the consent of the owners of the possession, such as the house of doctor Garau and the Mandilego inn, in addition to other homes that were under construction or already completed. However, the resolution of the Civil Government allowed those properties to be legally registered.
For this reason, the researcher considers that this date can be interpreted as the "christening" or the legal creation of Can Picafort, the moment when the colony obtained the administrative recognition that would mark the beginning of its subsequent development until it became one of the main tourist centers of Mallorca. The research has been based, among other sources, on the analysis of old deeds of the first houses built in the area, documentation that has made it possible to accurately reconstruct the first urbanistic steps of the nucleus.
The event was presented by the councilor for Culture of the Santa Margalida City Council, Rocío Romero. The Culture technician, Miquel Àngel Sastre, introduced the speaker before the intervention, while the mayor, Martí Àngel Torres, was in charge of closing the day. The commemoration ended with a toast among the attendees and the distribution of a cake specially made to celebrate the 115 years of that authorization which, according to the presented research, marked the legal birth of Can Picafort.
