PalmThe Balearic Government rejects Vox's plans to Castilianize the islands' place names. First Vice President Antoni Costa ruled out on Friday the possibility of the Popular Party's parliamentary group accepting the amendment to that effect that the far-right party has introduced into the strategic projects law. "Vox has the right to present whatever amendments it deems appropriate; whether they have the support of the PP is another matter," the government spokesperson stated. He argued that the PP will reject the proposal because it "violates the Law of Linguistic Normalization": "It's that simple, it's a red line." The text that the far-right party registered this week in the Balearic Parliament establishes that the islands' place names must have "Castilian and Catalan" as their official forms. This is a long-standing demand of Vox. In fact, Plataforma per la Llengua has already demanded that the Consell de Mallorca (where the PP and Vox govern) comply with the Law of normalization and put up road signs in Catalan. Some municipalities, such as CalviàThey also use Castilianized place names and street names in their communications with the public.

Vox's proposal comes after both groups announced last Monday that, through amendments to the same legislation, they will fulfill the budget agreement to eliminate the Catalan language requirement for teaching positions in hard-to-fill posts and remove it from various basic job categories in the civil service. "No one should be surprised that the PP is honoring its agreements," Costa said. "No red lines have been crossed; these are agreements that were already reached," he continued.
