PalmThe Spanish government this week notified the Executive of the proposal to transfer the first two migrant minors from the Canary Islands to the Balearic Islands. This was announced by First Vice President and Government Spokesperson Antoni Costa, who also stated that they will try to stop the arrival, the first, of a planned total of 49 minors. The Executive will present objections to the distribution within the ten days it has available and, if they are not accepted, will resort to legal action.

In a press conference following the meeting of the Governing Council, Costa stated that the Executive will request a precautionary suspension of the transfers through legal proceedings if these objections are denied. Similarly, he said that this week, 18 more unaccompanied migrant minors have arrived in Mallorca on small boats, bringing the number of unaccompanied minors currently hosting more than 700, with "extremely difficult" circumstances. In this regard, he said that they are working on a "skillful basis," "the sooner the better, the better, in case more minors arrive on our shores, not to accommodate other minors from other autonomous communities."

A "national disgrace"

"We will use all legal avenues, above all to once and for all make the Spanish government aware of the dramatic situation we are experiencing in the Islands," he insisted. "We need help; we cannot be abandoned as the Spanish government is doing; it is a true national disgrace," he concluded.
