PalmaMarratxí's budgets for 2026, approved this week with the votes of the PP and Vox, have opened a new political front in the municipality. The accounts amount to 42.6 million euros, 8.39% more than last year, and incorporate some of the main demands of the far-right party, which has provoked criticism from the opposition.

Among the measures promoted by Vox, the withdrawal of the Catalan language requirement to access certain municipal positions stands out, which will now be valued solely as a merit. The party has also called for changes in municipal language policy to increase the presence of Spanish in institutional communications, as well as a reduction in the municipal contribution to the Mallorcan Fund for Solidarity and Cooperation and an increase in spending on citizen security.

MÉS per Marratxí considers that these decisions show the growing influence of Vox within the municipal government and accuses the PP of having adopted a large part of its political agenda. The eco-sovereignist party, which voted against the accounts, maintains that the budget debate has highlighted the "lack of project and leadership" of the mayor, Jaume Llompart.

According to MÉS, after almost three years in office, the government continues to fail to explain what model of municipality it wants to build or what its main strategic bets are. The party regrets that during the budget debate, figures and allocations were discussed, but no transformative project or clear strategy for the future of Marratxí was presented.

Without public presentation

The eco-sovereignists also criticize that the government team would not have made any public presentation of the accounts before the extraordinary plenary session or any informational event so that citizens could know their content. Furthermore, they report that during the session no questions were answered about the economic situation of the City Council, compliance with the Economic and Financial Plan, the repeated warnings from the Intervention reports, or the lack of citizen participation.

For MÉS, this situation is a direct consequence of the political dependence of the PP on Vox. The party assures that Llompart "has too often given in to Vox's demands" and considers that this has led to a setback in areas such as citizen participation, transparency, and equality policies.

The party also questions that a large part of the actions that the government team presents as its own come from projects promoted during previous legislatures, such as the shade structures in educational centers, the canteen of CEIP Costa i Llobera, the nursery school of Can Baix Sol, and the pumptrack. Likewise, it regrets the lack of clear commitments to sustainable mobility, safe school routes, equality policies, sexual diversity, and adaptation to the effects of climate change.

Doubts about the viability of the accounts

The PSIB has also expressed doubts about the sustainability of the budgets approved by the municipal government. The socialists warn of the risk that the City Council may have to resort again to the sale of municipal assets to balance the accounts and question the viability of budgets that, as they have denounced, start with a financing need of nearly six million euros.

The socialists also consider that a significant part of the budgetary increase does not respond to better municipal management, but to the increase in transfers from the State. Furthermore, they have expressed concern about the projected increase in revenue from traffic fines and the dependence on resources linked to urban development processes and the regularization of buildings on rural land.

The PSIB also questions the execution capacity of accounts that, as it argues, could force the City Council to adopt new measures to correct budgetary imbalances if revenue forecasts are not met.

Although the criticisms of MÉS and PSIB focus on different aspects, both parties agree in pointing out the lack of a clear future project for the municipality and consider that the budgets consolidate the weight of Vox within the government action of Marratxí.
