PorreresMaria Agnès Sampol Sabater (Porreres, 1986) has become the new mayor of Porreres, 27 years after the People's Party (PP) last governed the municipality, replacing Xisca Mora Veny. She assumed the position as part of a governing pact signed between the PP and El Pi after each party won four seats in the 2023 elections, while Más won five.

Exceptionally, the plenary session was held for the first time in history—at least as far as records show—outside the town hall. The chosen venue was the municipal auditorium, which resulted in a massive turnout of representatives from all parties with municipal representation, but especially from the local People's Party (PP).

The celebration included live music and refreshments. The occasion was well worth it for the PP, and this was evident in the overall presentation. Indeed, Sampol's inauguration marks the return of the conservatives to the Porreres Town Hall, as the last mayor from the party was Biel Barceló, who, midway through the 1995-1999 term, took over from Josep Roig, who had to leave the mayoralty and politics for health reasons. This was back in the last century.

Thus, since 1999, Porreres had always had governments led by the regionalist party, whether UM, Convergència per les Illes, or El Pi, a period in which Joan Sastre, Bernat Bauçà, and finally Xisca Mora served as mayors.

For all these reasons, and given the importance of the occasion for the local PP, the top representatives of the conservatives at the regional level, led by Margalida Prohens, Llorenç Galmés, and Sebastià Sagreras, were present, along with high-ranking officials such as the mayor of Maria, Jaume Ferr, and the mayor of Santanyí, Maria Pons, among others.

The plenary session

The plenary session began under the presidency of Joan Obrador (PP), acting mayor since Mora stepped down on March 24. The session proceeded without surprises. Firstly, and in accordance with electoral law, all candidates were eligible for the mayoralty following Xisca Mora's resignation. Thus, Sebastià Lliteres (MÁS), from the opposition, submitted his candidacy and, in fact, received the votes of the five representatives from his party. For its part, El Pi did not present a candidate and supported the PP's proposal, resulting in Sampol being elected mayor of Porreres with eight votes in favor.

Regarding the speeches, Sebastià Lliteres began by congratulating everyone on their election and offering his support "to help in any way we can to improve our town." He then addressed the attendees, reminding them that MÁS received the most votes and thanking the 905 people who placed their trust in his candidacy. He mentioned the subsequent pact between the PP and El Pi, stating that "MÁS per Porreres respects democratic norms and the resulting agreements, with the deepest democratic conviction."

Lliteres then gave a lengthy list of the proposals and initiatives made by his party during this term while in opposition, as well as those that, according to MÁS, remain to be done by the governing team until the end of the legislature in 2027. "In a turbulent world, marked by war, wars, wars, constructive dialogue and consensus-based proposals, we will continue with the same enthusiasm, listening to the people and working every day," he added.

For her part, Xisca Mora began her speech by mentioning the 2023 governing pact and saying that it was "an agreement we assumed responsibly and with the will to bring stability to Porreres. We are people and a party of our word, and we fulfill the commitments we make." He then offered his support to the new mayor: "I extend my hand to you with respect and with the willingness to continue working together for our town. Governing requires perseverance, rigor, effort, constant sacrifice, and being close to the people. Governing for everyone, avoiding partisanship, remaining true to the agreement, and always having an inclusive project for everyone."

The mayor

Finally, the woman who has become the second female mayor in the history of Porreres assumed office with "deep emotion, humility, and responsibility," emphasizing that the mayoralty "is not a personal honor, but a collective commitment to the town." During her speech, she reaffirmed the values of hard work and honesty that have defined her career and thanked her team, the local People's Party (PP), and the El Pi coalition partners, with whom she has forged an agreement based on dialogue and institutional loyalty. She also expressed her appreciation to the previous mayor, assuming the role with a commitment to continuity and stability. Sampol, who reviewed the initiatives and projects underway during her term, dedicated a central part of her speech to the town's community organizations, which she described as "the soul and driving force of the town," and reiterated her commitment to maintaining close collaboration. She also highlighted the role of the sectors that sustain the local economy—farmers, shopkeepers, business owners, and the self-employed—and reaffirmed the government's support for economic activity and entrepreneurial initiatives that generate opportunities in the municipality. The mayor paid tribute to the aforementioned last mayor of Porreres, Josep Roig, who served from 1987 to 1999: "I am sure he would share with all of us the joy of that time." To conclude, she extended an olive branch to the opposition and emphasized dialogue as an essential tool for moving forward for the benefit of the town. She concluded by stating her desire to work to make Porreres "the best place to live, grow, and build a future," and called on the citizens to move forward together in this new phase.
