The snow once again whitens the Serra on a Sunday of cold, wind, and showers in Mallorca

The snowline has dropped to 700 meters and has forced the activation of snowplows while wind gusts have exceeded 70 km/h

PalmThe Tramuntana mountain range woke up this Sunday with a fully wintry scene that breaks with the spring-like atmosphere of recent weeks. During the early morning, snow made an appearance in the highest areas of Mallorca, coinciding with a notable drop in temperature and the arrival of an unstable weather episode.

According to geographer Albert Darder, this Palm Sunday could be the snowiest since 1969. Darder highlighted that this is the most significant snowfall in three years and the most relevant in a March month in the last 13 years. Early in the day, several centimeters of snow had already accumulated, and some meteorological models even showed temperatures of -4 °C at 1,500 meters above Mallorca, which implies an exceptionally low snowline.

The first snowfalls were recorded in the high points of the Sierra, especially in areas like Son Torrella, in the municipality of Escorca, where thermometers reached 0 degrees. Very low values were also recorded in the Alfàbia mountain range, with temperatures close to 1°C, a fact that has made it possible for the snow to settle in some places.

The episode has forced road maintenance crews to activate first thing this morning. Snowplows have been working on various roads in the Sierra due to the presence of snow and ice patches, which have complicated traffic on some sections. Reduced visibility and lack of grip have made it necessary to exercise extreme caution, especially in mountainous areas. The snow line has been around 700 meters, although it may have dropped a little more at times during the early hours of the day. Frost is not ruled out in the highest areas.

Wind has also been a prominent feature. The northerly component has blown with moderate to strong intensity, with general gusts of between 70 and 90 kilometers per hour, which in summits and exposed areas could reach up to 120 km/h. These conditions have contributed to accentuating the feeling of cold throughout the island.

The temperature has registered a notable drop compared to previous days, with maximums that have barely exceeded 11 degrees in some places. The atmosphere has remained cold throughout the day, with weather more typical of winter than the end of March.

In addition to snow, irregular showers are expected and, at times, storms with small hail. For this reason, caution is recommended when traveling, especially in mountainous areas and in places exposed to the wind.

This episode marks one of the coldest days in recent weeks and once again offers unusual images in Mallorca, with the Sierra whitened at the end of March.
