The young men from Sineu and Lloret are bordering on vandalism with their April Fools' Day pranks
The actions they carried out in the early hours of Holy Innocents' Day seem to have gone beyond a traditional prank, and vandalism has taken over their actions.
MajorcaThe rain that fell all night in the Pla de Mallorca dampened the spirits of the young men turning 20 in most towns. However, this wasn't the case in Sineu and Lloret, where their actions in the early hours of Holy Innocents' Day seem to have gone beyond a traditional prank, with vandalism taking over. Political criticism and mockery were nowhere to be seen. It seems social media has taken over the mantle of pranks.
As for the pranks on the street, the most widespread destruction occurred in Sineu. There, the young men caused more damage than anything else. They cut down young trees, painted the fountain in the town square, and smashed flowerpots. A poster advertising the Mulet's Party was the only political reference.
These events have led the City Council to issue a statement condemning the acts and indicating that an investigation will be opened to identify those responsible. "April Fools' pranks are fine, but not at any cost," the City Council stated. Furthermore, the Court encourages affected businesses and companies to file the appropriate complaints with the Local Police or the Civil Guard.
In Lloret de Vistalegre, the young men celebrating their 20th birthday also showed their true colors. The damage they caused was far greater than any protest or laughter. Damage to street furniture, graffiti, and filth everywhere—a lot of filth—was the defining characteristic of this year's centennial celebration. The Lloret Town Hall has also expressed its displeasure and has decided to take action to prevent similar incidents in the coming years.
In Maria de la Salut and Montuïri, two towns known for their ingenuity, the sheer volume of olive oil production, and the noise of the traditional celebrations, not a single firework was heard this year. Eggs, graffiti, and a bit of general filth were the dominant features throughout the night.
In Montuïri, the new mayor, Toni Miralles, had his traditional speeches and a doll with an "L" for practical training. In Algaida and Pina, there were also some activities organized by the young men turning 18 that year.
In Vilafranca, Lloret, Sant Joan, and Petra, the night has also been used for mischief in the towns. In Sant Joan, filling the street in front of the Town Hall with straw has become a tradition, and this year was no exception.
