The officers intercepted the two young men after a reckless chase through Son Gotleu and Marratxí; the stolen vehicle had been abandoned by the three occupants.
PalmThe National Police have arrested two young men accused of stealing a vehicle, driving it without a license, fleeing from officers, and assaulting them during a police chase in Palma. The incident occurred last Tuesday at approximately 4:40 a.m., when officers from the Citizen Assistance Group, who were carrying out crime prevention duties, spotted a vehicle with Italian license plates driving without lights in the Son Gotleu neighborhood. When the patrol approached the car, which had stopped at a traffic light, they attempted to identify its occupants, and the three individuals inside fled. Faced with this situation, the officers alerted other patrols to assist in the pursuit. The vehicle fled recklessly, disregarding traffic signs, towards Marratxí. Several patrols attempted to block its path without incident, until the car returned to the Son Gotleu neighborhood.
Once there, two of the three occupants abandoned the vehicle and continued their escape on foot. Officers managed to intercept the driver, who resisted arrest and assaulted the police. He injured one of the officers' knees during his subduing.
Meanwhile, another patrol located the passenger hiding under a van, a short distance from where the escape had begun. This second individual did not resist arrest.
After the arrests, officers confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen. Given these facts, the driver was arrested as the suspected perpetrator of vehicle theft, assaulting a police officer, and a traffic offense. The passenger was arrested for resisting arrest and disobeying a lawful order, as well as vehicle theft. The third occupant of the vehicle managed to escape and was not located.
