PalmaThe debate over pensions that has pitted parties against each other in Madrid has reached the Balearic Parliament. The Chamber has approved a non-legislative text from the PSIB that rejects "the Vox proposal to convert the public pension system into a system with individual capitalization." The proposal went forward with the votes of the left and thanks to the abstention of the PP.
In parallel, the Chamber has unanimously urged the government of Spain to reject any reform, total or partial, of the current pension system that implies a cut in the future pensions of workers, with special emphasis on the lowest ones. It has also noted (again with the abstention of the PP) that any reform of the public pension system towards an individual capitalization model would have "perverse" effects in the Islands, because there are 194,000 permanent seasonal workers. Furthermore, it has urged the Spanish government to maintain the annual revaluation of pensions linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to guarantee the purchasing power of pensioners.
On the other hand, the PP abstained and therefore the proposal to urge the government of Spain to continue strengthening contributions to the Social Security Reserve Fund, to guarantee the payment of present and future pensions, has fallen. "When the PP says that one must be brave, it means that the rights of workers must be cut," chided the PSIB spokesperson, Iago Negueruela: "We are on the path to the privatization of the public pension system".
Vox defends a mixed system
The Vox spokesperson, Manuela Cañadas, has lashed out at the PSIB for "bringing out the engineering of fear" ahead of the elections: "They are going after retirees to scare them." "What is difficult is explaining how to guarantee a pension 20 years from now without stifling the workers who sustain it," she quipped. "They attribute a privatization to us that we do not propose," she continued. The proposal from Vox in the Congress of Deputies is to create a mixed pension system with a part of public distribution and a part of private capitalization.
