PalmThe Platform for Democratic Memory commemorated the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Francoism this Wednesday, October 29th, with an event in which they called on the President of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, not to repeal the Democratic Memory Law. Several people attended the commemoration in Plaça de Cort, where a manifesto was read to remember the more than 3,000 victims in the Balearic Islands and reaffirm the commitment to "truth, dignity, and the defense of democratic memory." The president of Memoria de Mallorca, Maria Antònia Oliver, publicly denounced the fact that the Balearic Government has not commemorated this date for three consecutive years, as established by the still-valid Democratic Memory Law. She therefore called on the Balearic Executive to "reconsider" the foreseeable repeal of the Democratic Memory Law. "They accuse us of being sectarian, but we defend the rights and reparations for all victims, without making any kind of distinction," he emphasized.

Several people attended the commemoration in Cort Square.

Similarly, Oliver has asked the Catalan government to make public studies on the Civil War commissioned during the previous legislature. This demand was made by sources within the platform at the last meeting of the Commission for Democratic Memory, which, according to Oliver, has met only twice this legislature compared to more than 70 times in the previous one. They also "firmly" denounced the PP and Vox's intention to repeal the Law of Democratic Memory, which, they emphasized, was the result of consensus and democratic dignity. Its repeal, they warned, would represent an "intolerable" step backward in the recognition of victims and in the institutional commitment to ethical and democratic values. "Sectarianism"

In his opinion, the Prime Minister's announcement of a tribute to the victims of the Republican bombings demonstrates "sectarianism" by "forgetting" those on the other side. "We are not against tributes being held; what we want is for the victims who lack access to truth, justice, and reparations to receive them," Oliver stated.

Tribute this Saturday

The Mallorca Memory Association has organized a tribute this Saturday, November 1st, at the Wall of Memory, featuring a simultaneous reading of its name and a collective floral offering. Members of the PSIB, MÁS per Mallorca, and Podemos parties attended the commemoration.
