The Catalan Parliament is publishing its official bulletin in Spanish again after 34 years.
The bulletin has been published in bilingual format following the agreement of the Parliament's Bureau
PalmThe Official Bulletin of the Parliament (BOPIB) number 124 was published this Friday for the first time in Catalan and Spanish since 1992. This bulletin was published in bilingual format following the agreement of the Parliament's Bureau of February 14, 2024, modified by the same Bureau on February 28, 2020.
The BOPIB is one of the official publications of the Parliament, along with the Journal of Proceedings, in accordance with Article 108.1 of the Rules of Procedure, and constitutes the official means of publishing parliamentary texts and documents. According to Article 110.1 of the Rules of Procedure, texts and documents are published when their publication is required by any provision of the Rules of Procedure, whether necessary for relevant information or for proper processing; also when ordered by the Speaker. Between 1983 and 1991 it was published in Catalan and Spanish, and from 1992 until now it has been published only in Catalan. The OCB regrets that the PP is allowing itself to be dragged along by Vox.
For its part, the Balearic Cultural Association lamented this Friday that the far right is imposing its "anti-Mallorcan bilingualism" agenda and breaking with 34 years of consensus among democratic political forces. "Catalan has been the language of normal use and operation of the institutions and public administrations of the Balearic Islands, as a consequence of its status as the islands' own language; no democratic force should allow the far right to break this consensus," the organization stated on social media. "We deeply regret that the People's Party (PP) has once again allowed itself to be dragged along by Vox in its crusade against our language, something that contradicts the linguistic practices of former Speakers of Parliament from their party: Cristóbal Soler, Pedro Rotger, Joan Huguet, and Margalida Duran," they added.
